Retiring from academia is not as easy as I thought it would be. Perhaps it is because, according to the official campus announcement I was given an additional thousand years before officially leaving on June 30, 3019!
I have fond memories of my last graduation ceremony on campus. In fact, I think of that date as the date I myself graduated from Carroll rather than when I “retired.” Perhaps emeritus faculty should be given some sort of designation such as honorary Carroll alumni.
There is a lot of confusion about what emeritus status means. Here is a thoughtful article I came across.
Here is a current list of living Carroll emeritus faculty and staff according to a recent addition to their web page. Missing from the list are a number of my legendary emeritus friends who have passed. It is a bit unsettling to think that I shall disappear so quickly – though not for another 996 years!
I am proud to be included in our emeritus group – an excellent but undervalued resource.
I still have a university email account (though I have little reason to regularly check it) and access to some university software. In any given day I interact with 10-15 members of my extended Carroll Community. I am delighted to still be in touch with present students, Colleagues (especially on Facebook!), and Campus Friends.
Time to return to my reading and writing.
